A shoplifting report at a Canton, Ohio, Walmart on Thursday took an alarming turn when suspect Shane Newman, 21, attempted to use a firearm against a responding police officer. The incident, which could have resulted in serious injury or even fatality, was averted thanks to the timely intervention by a store security worker and the suspect's malfunctioning weapon.
"He pulls the gun out, points it at my head, and pulls the trigger. It doesn’t go off," recounted the officer involved in the confrontation.
The situation began when Walmart employees detained Newman and Katerina Jeffrey, 23, for attempting to leave the store with merchandise they had not purchased. Both individuals were brought to the loss prevention office to await police arrival. Initial interactions, as recorded by the officer's body camera, showed Newman and Jeffrey in a seemingly calm state while a routine search was conducted. Newman voluntarily surrendered a container which was later verified to contain illegal substances. During the questioning, Jeffrey inquired about the possibility of their arrest.
The calm, however, was short-lived. Authorities report that Newman abruptly drew a handgun from a shoulder bag and aimed it at the officer, pulling the trigger twice without success. A quick-reacting Walmart security employee tackled Newman in an effort to disarm him, preventing the gun from firing. The officer managed to restrain Newman with the help of the security worker. Backup officers arrived shortly after to secure the area.
Newman, who was later discovered to have an active warrant and classified as "armed and dangerous," now faces charges including attempted murder and felonious assault on a police officer. His bond is set at $1 million. Jeffrey has been charged with complicity to commit robbery and ammunition possession under disability after officers found ammunition on her person. Both are currently held at Stark County Jail.
Canton Police Chief John Gabbard underscored the dangers law enforcement officers encounter daily and expressed gratitude for the divine protection and community support that officers receive. The malfunctioning gun, coupled with the security employee's rapid response, was credited for the aversion of a potentially tragic outcome.
As investigators delve into the incident to assess and enhance security and safety protocols, the event highlights the unpredictable and high-risk nature of retail theft incidents involving armed individuals. The effective and vigilant response of both the Walmart security team and the police officer exemplifies the critical nature of preparedness and coordination in such emergencies.
