Minneapolis has been engulfed in a wave of protests and violence following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. The turmoil reached new heights on Friday night when a group of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rioters stormed a downtown hotel based on unconfirmed tips that ICE agents were lodged there.
The unrest began after Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent on Wednesday afternoon, under circumstances captured by video evidence. The recordings show Good accelerating her vehicle towards the agent, who subsequently fired at her in response. Despite the video documentation, some Democratic officials have issued statements that appear to contradict the footage, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
In the aftermath of the shooting, large protests transpired near the site of the incident and spread to federal courthouses and immigration facilities. While the demonstrations started peacefully, the situation deteriorated with several protestors engaging in violent acts, leading to multiple arrests by federal authorities.
Thursday night saw attempts by demonstrators to establish roadblocks and create an autonomous zone, reminiscent of similar actions during the George Floyd protests in Seattle in 2020. Law enforcement interpreted these efforts as a strategy to obstruct police access and control movement within certain city parts.
The escalation continued into Friday when protestors, acting on online rumors, marched on the Renaissance Hotel, leading to property damage and disruption. Subsequent reports indicated that multiple hotels were targeted under the suspicion of harboring ICE agents, although no official confirmation of agents' presence at the sites has been provided.
This surge in hostility preceded a significant increase in federal presence in Minneapolis. By Friday morning, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had dispatched 2,000 agents to assist with immigration enforcement within the city. Following the hotel incident, DHS announced an additional deployment of 1,000 agents, citing the necessity to continue immigration operations and safeguard federal properties.
This bolstered deployment is part of Operation PARRIS, dubbed the most extensive immigration enforcement endeavor to date by DHS, which has already resulted in over 1,000 arrests. The federal presence is slated to persist until order is restored and the safety of personnel and facilities is assured.

A recent tweet by journalist Nick Sortor highlighted the rioters' decision to shift their focus to another hotel after discovering ICE was not present at their initial target.
