New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani found himself at the center of a media storm after reports emerged that his wife, Rama Duwaji, had engaged with social media content related to the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023. This information came to light when Jewish Insider published findings from an examination of Duwaji's Instagram account, detailing her activity in the aftermath of the attack.
The October 7 incident was a significant and tragic event, resulting in the deaths of nearly 1,200 individuals, including Israelis and foreign workers, leaving thousands wounded. The attack also involved the taking of 251 hostages, both civilians and military personnel, and reports of numerous sexual assaults. In the wake of these events, Duwaji's social media interactions have drawn considerable attention.
According to Fox News, among the content Duwaji liked were posts depicting a bulldozer breaking through the barrier between Israel and Gaza and individuals atop a captured Israeli Defense Forces vehicle. The accompanying messages included phrases such as "Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation" and "Resisting apartheid since 1948," coupled with a call for "Systemic change for collective liberation."
Further investigation revealed that Duwaji had liked a post from a demonstration by The People's Forum, which took place in New York City's Times Square on October 8, 2023. The event's caption demanded an end to U.S. aid to Israel. The People's Forum is identified as part of a network of nonprofits associated with Shanghai-based tech mogul Neville "Roy" Singham, known for advancing pro-China, pro-Russia, and pro-Iran propaganda. NBC New York highlighted that some of the posts Duwaji liked included the phrase "from the river to the sea," which has been interpreted by many Jewish organizations as a call for the eradication of Israel.
Duwaji's activity went beyond liking individual posts. She engaged with over 70 Instagram posts containing radical anti-Israel sentiments, as revealed by social media users Olivia Reingold and Eyal Yakoby on Twitter. These posts also included criticism of mainstream media investigations into the October 7 attacks, with one accusing The New York Times of fabricating reports of sexual violence.
When confronted with questions about his wife's social media behavior, Mayor Mamdani defended Duwaji as a private citizen without any formal role in his campaign or administration. He emphasized his commitment to representing all residents of the city and his responsibility to address inquiries related to his own political positions.
In response to the controversy, a City Hall spokesperson issued a statement reiterating Mayor Mamdani's stance: "Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7th was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally."
This story has sparked a debate over the influence of a politician's family members on public perception and the bounds of private versus public persona in the digital age.
