In Compton, California, a federal immigration enforcement operation took a dangerous turn on Wednesday morning when a suspect used his vehicle to attempt an escape, causing a federal agent to discharge their firearm. The incident, which resulted in the injury of a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, highlighted the risks associated with apprehending individuals who have violent criminal backgrounds and outstanding immigration orders.
At the center of the operation was William Eduardo Moran Carballo, an El Salvador national with a final order of removal since 2019. Carballo, who has been previously arrested for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, is also alleged to have connections to a human smuggling ring, making him a high-priority target for federal enforcement agencies.
The confrontation began early in the day during a planned arrest operation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers in the Compton area. The situation escalated rapidly when Carballo reportedly attempted to flee by driving his vehicle towards law enforcement personnel. A DHS spokesperson stated, "In a dangerous attempt to evade arrest, this criminal illegal alien weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement. Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots."
Although Carballo was not hit by the gunfire, he made an attempt to flee on foot but was ultimately apprehended. The CBP officer involved sustained injuries during the encounter, the severity of which has not been disclosed by officials. However, the incident was emphasized as posing an immediate danger to officer safety.
Local law enforcement, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the scene to assist with traffic control, but the federal operation was led by DHS. The aftermath showed a silver BMW with extensive damage, indicating the intensity of the encounter.
The DHS has used incidents like the one in Compton to draw attention to what it describes as a significant rise in assaults against federal officers during immigration enforcement operations. They attribute this increase to sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal authorities, with reports of a staggering 3,200% increase in vehicle attacks.
This incident follows another recent confrontation in Minneapolis, where an ICE agent was forced to open fire after a vehicle drove into federal officers. That altercation resulted in the death of the driver and sparked public unrest.
