Authorities in Fairfax County, Virginia, have taken 23-year-old Marvin Morales-Ortez into custody on Wednesday following a fatal shooting incident at a Reston home. Morales-Ortez, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, was apprehended after a manhunt ensued when he allegedly shot and killed a man inside the residence. The victim was declared deceased at the scene of the crime.
The arrest occurred on Fan Shell Court, where the suspect reportedly fled, prompting a search involving K9 units, drones, and patrol officers. Morales-Ortez was captured and now faces a second-degree murder charge. He has been in the spotlight previously due to a series of criminal charges in Fairfax County since 2020, including assault and firearm violations. Despite these charges and an active detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he was released from custody.
ICE has criticized the local authorities for not honoring the detainer, suggesting that the murder could have been averted. They have been vocal about the risks associated with noncompliance with federal detainers, emphasizing the potential threat to public safety. In response to Morales-Ortez's release, the local Community Services Board secured an Emergency Custody Order due to concerns about his mental health and the danger he could pose. Unfortunately, the order expired before he could be taken into custody.
