A 24-year-old Georgia resident, Aliakbar Mohammad Amin, was taken into federal custody on charges of making death threats against Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, and her family. The arrest occurred on April 11, following an investigation into a series of menacing messages sent by Amin between March 29 and April.
Authorities from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia reported that the threats were delivered via text and social media. One chilling message read, "You and your family are going to die soon," while another stated, "I will personally do the job if necessary."
“Threatening to harm public officials is a criminal act that cannot be excused as political discourse.” - Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr.
The investigation, which involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), also uncovered social media posts by Amin with threatening images. These included photographs where firearms were pointed at pictures of Gabbard and her husband. Upon executing a search warrant at Amin's home in Lilburn, Georgia, a firearm was seized, establishing a connection between the threats and the suspect.
Amin is facing charges under Title 18, U.S. Code Section 875(c), which criminalizes the transmission of threats across state lines. Following his initial court appearance, he was ordered to remain in custody until trial. Prosecutors have vowed to pursue the case vigorously, highlighting the severity of threats against public figures.
Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. has strongly condemned the act, stating, “Threatening to harm public officials is a criminal act that cannot be excused as political discourse.” He assured that, in collaboration with law enforcement partners, they would "vigorously prosecute individuals who commit these acts of violence."
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta, Paul Brown, emphasized the seriousness with which the FBI regards such threatening communications. “We will employ every investigative tool and resource available to identify those responsible and ensure they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Brown asserted.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, which brings together federal resources to tackle violent crime, illegal immigration, and global crime syndicates. As part of this initiative, the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods are working in unison.
While details about Amin's background or motives have not been disclosed, the gravity of his actions is clear. Law enforcement continues to monitor the situation closely, underscoring their commitment to protecting public officials and their families. The case against Amin is proceeding as the trial preparations are underway.
