The Federal Bureau of Investigation has successfully disrupted a Chinese espionage operation that sought to recruit American service members and acquire sensitive defense information. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino made the announcement on Thursday, highlighting the agency's execution of eight search warrants in cities including San Francisco, Houston, Portland, and San Diego. Subsequent to these coordinated efforts, two individuals were arrested.
According to Bongino's post, the network was described as "sophisticated" and had direct connections to the Chinese government. He underlined the significance of the public being aware of the FBI's actions to safeguard national security. The disruption of this spy ring is part of a broader initiative by the FBI to combat foreign espionage on American soil.
Recent incidents have seen US Army personnel apprehended for providing intelligence to the People's Republic of China. Bongino termed these acts as "treason-adjacent espionage." The operatives targeted critical defense technologies, including classified missile and drone systems, while also conducting surveillance and intimidation within the US.
The FBI has been increasingly vigilant, with officials revealing the apprehension of 51 foreign intelligence agents from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea since January 2025. The offenses range from economic espionage and sanctions evasion to theft of classified data and smuggling of biological materials.
The agency is managing nearly 5,000 open counterintelligence cases, with over 800 initiated this year alone, indicating a sharp rise in foreign threats. In a move towards greater transparency, the FBI has declassified thousands of pages of counterintelligence documents and sent them to Congress to strengthen public oversight and rebuild trust in the bureau.
Bongino's announcement also coincides with speculation about his future at the FBI, following reported disagreements over the Justice Department's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Despite taking a personal day recently, he returned to work, with his long-term position within the bureau still uncertain amid tensions with Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The joint FBI-DOJ review of the Epstein case, delivered to Congress earlier this week, has caused division within Trump's political base, with some supporters siding with Bongino, who previously expressed skepticism about the official narrative surrounding Epstein’s death.
