San Francisco, CA – Nation Wood, a 25-year-old individual who previously worked as an advance security staffer supporting White House operations, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Samantha Katherine Emge, 22. The incident occurred on the night of March 24 inside an apartment in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
San Francisco Police Department officers responded to reports of a residential shooting at approximately 10:43 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, they discovered Ms. Emge suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Investigators determined that a single live round had discharged, with the bullet reportedly passing through a wall before striking Ms. Emge. At the time of the shooting, only Wood and Emge were present in the apartment.
Homicide investigators developed probable cause, leading to Wood’s arrest early the following morning, March 25. He was subsequently booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. During his arraignment on March 27, court records indicate that Wood pleaded not guilty to the charge. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Christopher Hu set bail at $300,000.
Wood’s public defender, Doug Welch, has characterized the incident as a "horrific accident" and stated that his client intends to cooperate fully with authorities throughout the legal process. Mr. Welch also requested Wood’s release to a relative’s custody, noting his client had a pending National Guard commitment. Should Wood post bail, he would be subject to electronic monitoring and prohibited from leaving California without explicit court approval. A passport forfeiture hearing has been scheduled for April 9 as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
Sources familiar with the investigation, speaking to local outlet KNTV, indicated that Wood informed police he had been dry-firing a handgun inside the apartment and was unaware the weapon was loaded at the time of the discharge. The bullet reportedly traveled through a wall, striking Ms. Emge while she was in the bathroom. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins addressed the media, stating that the probe remains in its early stages, emphasizing, "This is a very fresh investigation." San Francisco Supervisor Alan Wong, whose district encompasses the Sunset area where the shooting occurred, also commented in a statement to the San Francisco Standard, noting that initial information suggested the shooting was not intentional.
Samantha Katherine Emge was a 2025 graduate of San Francisco State University, where she earned a degree in interior design. At the time of her untimely death, she was employed at a design firm in San Francisco. Reports suggest she and Wood were in a relationship and had traveled together to Yosemite National Park in June of the previous year.
Nation Wood attended San Francisco State University for less than two years. His professional background includes working part-time on event and travel planning for the White House between November 2023 and July 2025. On his LinkedIn profile, Wood identified himself as an independent pre-event site security advisor. The New York Post reported that his listed duties involved external advisory site security assessments for events with VIP attendance, site walkthroughs, and coordination alongside U.S. Secret Service personnel for senior government officials. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms. Emge's death is ongoing as authorities gather further evidence and testimony.
