In the early hours of Sunday, the peaceful aftermath of Passover celebrations at the Pennsylvania governor's mansion was shattered as an intruder attempted to set the property ablaze. Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep when 38-year-old Cody Balmer allegedly broke into their residence and started a fire, leading to a rapid and chaotic response from security personnel.
The frightening event took place around 2:00 a.m., following the governor's Passover celebration. Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, during a Sunday evening press conference, detailed how Balmer jumped the mansion's fence and deployed "homemade incendiary devices" in a premeditated attack. Bivens recounted the swift and tumultuous circumstances, noting that Balmer evaded troopers tasked with securing the residence before initiating the arson.
The urgent situation unfolded in a matter of minutes, with police officers actively searching for the intruder as he executed the attack. Fortunately, the security team's rapid intervention prevented any injuries, although officials reported significant damage to parts of the mansion.
Governor Shapiro addressed the media with emotional remarks, denouncing the violence that he said is increasingly infiltrating American politics. "This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society," he stated, stressing that political violence must be universally condemned and brought to an end.
