The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken into custody a Colombian teenager found responsible for the death of Kaitlyn Weaver, a 24-year-old woman from Colorado, in a case that has stirred national interest. The tragic incident occurred in July 2024, when the then-15-year-old was involved in a street racing accident that claimed Weaver's life. Although the juvenile was convicted, the sentencing led to controversy due to the nature of the punishment – probation and community service rather than jail time – which has been further complicated by his status as an illegal immigrant.
The fatal crash happened when the teenager, racing at high speeds in a residential area, collided with Weaver's vehicle at an intersection. The severity of the impact resulted in Weaver being placed on life support, and she succumbed to her injuries two days later. The Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office, led by Democrat Amy Padden, initially offered no plea deal. However, the stance shifted, and a plea agreement was reached, allowing the teen to avoid incarceration.
This decision was met with dismay by Weaver's family, particularly her father, John Weaver. He criticized the DA's office for participating in what he considers a flawed system, asserting that the judge should have set the sentence without the influence of a lenient plea deal.
