The conversation, which took place on Saturday morning, was shared by President Trump on Truth Social, indicating that the two leaders delved into the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to Trump, Putin expressed a keen interest in the situation in Iran, following the recent hostilities that erupted late Thursday between the Middle Eastern nation and Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has been actively pursuing measures to dismantle Iran's nuclear capabilities. Putin, amidst his country’s military actions in Ukraine which started in February 2022, offered to mediate between Israel and Iran just a day before his call with Trump.
The discussions were heavily centered on the Iran-Israel conflict, but the war in Ukraine was also on the agenda. Trump revealed that Putin confirmed the initiation of significant prisoner exchanges between Russian and Ukrainian forces. "Large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides," Trump relayed, underscoring a development in the otherwise grim situation in Eastern Europe.
The hour-long dialogue also touched upon Russia's own conflict in Ukraine, with Trump reiterating his desire for an end to the hostilities and his belief in his ability to broker peace. The former president had previously pledged to avoid entangling the U.S. in global wars during the 2024 election campaign and had expressed confidence in his negotiating skills to achieve peace in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Trump’s birthday, which was also marked by a military parade scheduled near the Ellipse and Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C., comes at a time when diplomatic efforts for a major peace agreement seem elusive.
