Recent disclosures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have brought to light allegations of political misuse within the Transportation Security Agency's (TSA) watchlisting program during the Biden administration. Documents released on Wednesday reveal a two-tiered operation where Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) secured preferential treatment for her spouse, Billy Shaheen, while the TSA simultaneously conducted surveillance on critics of the Biden administration.
The controversy began to unfold in July 2023 when Sen. Shaheen took direct action after her husband was flagged during two separate flights for enhanced screening due to his travel with a known or suspected terrorist. Sen. Shaheen contacted TSA Administrator David Pekoske, and within two days of her outreach in October 2023, Billy Shaheen was granted a "blank exemption." This decision placed him on the Secure Flight Exclusion List, which shielded his travel activities from surveillance for 18 months, until April 2024, despite his documented travel history with individuals flagged as potential threats.
Simultaneously, the TSA's resources were diverted to monitor individuals opposing the Biden administration's policies. Among those targeted was Tulsi Gabbard, then the National Intelligence Director, who was extensively surveilled during her domestic flights in 2024. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) confirmed these operations during his congressional testimony, noting detailed reports on Gabbard's behavior and electronics use during flights.
The scope of the surveillance extended beyond high-profile figures to include broader categories of American citizens. Sonya LaBosco, director of the Air Marshal National Council, testified that orders were given to monitor anyone who traveled to Washington D.C. in January 2021, irrespective of their involvement in Capitol events or political rallies. This shift in focus led to a reduction in standard security missions, according to LaBosco.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has vehemently criticized the alleged politicization of the TSA program. She emphasized the need for security programs to function impartially and without favoritism. The Trump administration, she assured, would work to restore the integrity and equitable application of aviation screening laws.
These revelations have stirred significant controversy, as they suggest a potential breach of public trust and the misuse of federal resources for partisan purposes.
