Amid escalating controversies surrounding Planned Parenthood's services, Republican lawmakers in Congress are making concerted efforts to eliminate the organization's access to taxpayer dollars. This initiative comes in response to the latest report from Planned Parenthood, which indicates not only a record number of abortions performed but also a notable increase in government funding.
According to Breitbart, Planned Parenthood's newest annual report for 2023-2024, named "A Force For Hope," discloses that the organization conducted 402,230 abortions, a rise from the 392,715 procedures reported the preceding year. Concurrently, the group's taxpayer-funded revenue escalated to $792.2 million, marking an upsurge of nearly $100 million from the year before.
Republicans are considering using the budget reconciliation process to bypass the usual 60-vote threshold in the Senate, taking advantage of their current control over the trifecta of government branches. The budget reconciliation process allows for expedited consideration of certain tax, spending, and debt limit legislation.
The report also sheds light on the expansion of other services provided by Planned Parenthood, such as prenatal services, which grew by 11 percent to 7,008, and adoption referrals, which saw a 25 percent increase to approximately 2,100. Total services, covering almost a million pregnancy tests, rose by 3.5 percent. However, there was a notable downturn in financial performance, with excess revenue over expenses plunging nearly 85 percent. Additionally, other critical services, including contraceptive services, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and cancer screenings, all experienced declines.
Despite these mixed statistics, conservative critics remain focused on the organization's involvement in abortion services and gender-affirming care for transgender individuals, which includes hormone therapies and surgeries, some of which are provided to minors. Breitbart reports that Planned Parenthood is the nation's second-largest provider of gender-affirming care, a term that is under scrutiny by some who argue it obfuscates the potential risks of such medical interventions.
The organization's reporting on gender-affirming services is ambiguous, as these are grouped into a broad category of "other procedures," making it difficult to discern the exact number of such treatments provided. This category's procedures have significantly decreased from over 250,000 in previous years to nearly 78,000 this year. Nevertheless, Planned Parenthood continues to be a formidable force against abortion restrictions, being involved in approximately 30 ongoing legal cases.
The Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding for abortions, is cited by Republicans as a basis for their argument that no taxpayer money should support any organization that provides abortions or related services. They view the reconciliation process as a key legislative strategy to halt the billions in federal funds flowing to Planned Parenthood.
This heated debate extends to social media, where pro-life activists like Lila Rose highlight Planned Parenthood's practices, such as providing hormone treatments to minors without mandatory counseling, and receiving substantial federal funding. Rose's tweet from May 15, 2025, expresses outrage at the situation and points out that Representatives Lawler and Fitzpatrick are opposing defunding efforts.
The push to defund Planned Parenthood is not only a reflection of moral and ethical concerns but also a strategic move in the ongoing political battle over reproductive rights and gender identity treatment in the United States.
