Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) is confronting a series of serious accusations involving sexual misconduct, including claims of rape from a former staffer. These allegations have surfaced at a critical juncture for Swalwell, who has been actively positioning himself as a prominent candidate in California’s upcoming gubernatorial race. The accusations raise significant questions about his political future and public standing.
A former staffer has come forward with detailed accounts, telling CNN that Swalwell allegedly assaulted her in 2024 following an evening of drinking in New York. She recounted the incident, stating, "I was pushing him off of me, saying no… He didn’t stop." According to her testimony, she later awoke in his hotel room feeling disoriented and discovered bruises, cuts, and bleeding, prompting her to seek medical testing shortly thereafter. This same woman also detailed a separate incident in 2019, claiming she woke up naked in a hotel room with Swalwell after consuming a significant amount of alcohol, with no recollection of the events. She recalled telling him at the time, "I really don’t remember it at all." The accuser explained her delay in reporting the incidents, stating, "I just felt so dirty and gross… it just became a secret that I lived with."
Beyond the former staffer's claims, three other women have also alleged separate instances of misconduct against Representative Swalwell. Some of these women claim that Swalwell sent them unsolicited explicit messages and images through social media platforms, including Snapchat. One woman described an initial connection with him over political discussions that she said gradually escalated into interactions that became increasingly personal and sexual. Another accuser recounted becoming heavily intoxicated during an evening out with Swalwell, subsequently ending up in his hotel room with only limited memory of the night's events. She stated, "He was sitting against me, and every time that I would move away from him, he would get closer." Several of the accusers have described what they perceive as a consistent pattern of behavior, alleging that Swalwell would show interest in younger women before their interactions would take a sexual turn, as reported by Conservative Brief.
CNN has stated that it reviewed various supporting materials related to these claims, including messages and photos. Friends and family members of multiple accusers have also affirmed that the women had confided in them about these incidents around the time they allegedly occurred. In one specific instance, the former staffer provided text messages sent shortly after the alleged 2024 incident, in which she identified Swalwell and stated she had been assaulted.
In response to the mounting allegations, Representative Swalwell has issued a strong denial of all claims. He stated, "These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They are absolutely false." He further asserted that the claims "did not happen" and has vowed to vigorously contest them. Swalwell has also suggested that the timing of these allegations is politically motivated, noting their emergence "on the eve of an election." His legal team has taken proactive measures, sending cease-and-desist letters to two of the women, demanding retractions and cautioning them about potential legal consequences.
Despite the serious nature of the accusations, some individuals who previously worked for Representative Swalwell have come forward to defend him. They informed CNN that they never personally experienced or witnessed any inappropriate behavior and characterized him as professional in the workplace. The unfolding situation presents a significant challenge for Representative Swalwell as he navigates both his current congressional duties and his potential gubernatorial campaign amid intense public scrutiny. The outcome of these allegations and his response will undoubtedly shape his political trajectory and public perception.
