A violent incident unfolded at Temple Israel, one of Michigan’s largest synagogues in West Bloomfield Township, on Thursday, prompting a federal investigation into what authorities have described as a deliberate act of violence. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese-born naturalized U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by security personnel after he drove a truck into the religious institution.
Federal officials confirmed Ghazali carried out the attack, which targeted the synagogue’s early childhood education center. At the time of the incident, approximately 140 children, teachers, and staff were present inside the building. Temple Israel later confirmed that despite the vehicle penetrating the structure, all individuals within the education center remained unharmed.
The incident began just after noon when Ghazali drove a truck into the synagogue. A member of the synagogue’s security team confronted the suspect and was struck by the vehicle, sustaining injuries. Authorities reported that the security guard is expected to make a full recovery. Ultimately, security personnel intervened by firing upon Ghazali, ending the assault. Following the confrontation, the truck caught fire inside the synagogue, necessitating a rapid response from local fire departments to contain the blaze.
Law enforcement agencies, including local police and federal authorities, swiftly converged on the scene. Tactical teams, police units, and helicopters were deployed to secure the area. The surrounding neighborhood was placed under lockdown, and nearby schools and places of worship temporarily implemented increased security measures as a precaution.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the ongoing investigation into the attack. Jennifer Runyan, the special agent in charge of the Detroit FBI office, stated that investigators are working diligently to understand what motivated the suspect. Court records indicate that Ghazali resided in Dearborn Heights and was employed at Hamido Restaurant. He had a prior marital history, with a divorce finalized in March 2025.
Sources familiar with the investigation have reported that several of Ghazali’s relatives, including a sibling, were killed in a military strike in Lebanon just days before the synagogue attack. While officials have not yet confirmed a direct connection between these deaths and the assault, investigators are examining Ghazali’s social media activity. Posts linked to Ghazali reportedly referenced family members killed in a recent Israeli strike in Mashghara, Lebanon. However, the authenticity of these posts and their potential influence on the attack remain unverified by authorities.
The attack has significantly heightened concerns regarding the safety of Jewish institutions across the United States. This concern is particularly acute as tensions related to the ongoing conflict with Iran continue to escalate. Organizations nationwide have been advised to implement precautionary lockout procedures while the investigation progresses and authorities assess potential threats.
In response to the incident, President Donald Trump stated he had been briefed and characterized the event as a “terrible thing.” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) also condemned the act, emphasizing that all communities should have the right to practice their faith safely and without fear.
Temple Israel issued a statement praising the swift and courageous actions of its security staff and the rapid response of first responders, crediting them with preventing further harm. During the emergency, the nearby Shenandoah Country Club provided shelter and support to the displaced children and staff from the synagogue, underscoring community solidarity in the face of adversity.
Authorities continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review Ghazali’s background comprehensively. The primary objectives of the investigation are to definitively determine the motive behind the attack and ascertain whether any other individuals were involved in its planning or execution.
