In a case that has shocked the small community of DeRidder, Louisiana, former Mayor Misty Roberts stands accused of engaging in an unlawful sexual encounter with a minor. The incident, which allegedly took place during a pool party in 2024, involved a 16-year-old boy who was a friend of Roberts' son. The trial, held last week in Beauregard Parish, has brought to light details of the event that suggest a night of irresponsible behavior and serious legal implications for Roberts.
Roberts, 43, who was serving her second term as mayor at the time of the incident, hosted the party at her residence, a place familiar to many local youths. According to witness testimony, the underage victim appeared to be heavily intoxicated, having vomited at one point during the evening. Witnesses described Roberts as being flirtatious with the teen, and a photograph presented in court depicted her in a bikini, with the teenager looking up at her, smiling.
The situation took a darker turn when Roberts' own daughter allegedly told others at the party that she saw her mother kissing the minor near the pool. This account was corroborated by another witness who claimed to have seen Roberts and the boy engaged in a sexual act. Even more damning was the testimony from Roberts' son, who told investigators he witnessed the encounter through a window, although he later expressed uncertainty about his recollection.
Text message evidence showed that Roberts' son had texted her during the event, expressing concern for his sister's distress. The prosecution also presented a text exchange between Roberts and the victim's mother, in which Roberts confirmed she was not pregnant and mentioned being on birth control. Following advice from friends in a group chat, Roberts reportedly ordered emergency contraception via DoorDash.
The trial has also heard from Duncan Clanton, Roberts' ex-husband, who testified that Roberts admitted to the sexual act and that her children had seen it. Clanton's own view of Roberts has since changed, as evidenced by his response to questioning about whether he still considered her a "great mom."
Roberts, who resigned from her mayoral position shortly after the allegations surfaced and police began their investigation, faces serious charges. These include third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles. This trial comes after a previous mistrial, which was declared when two judges were recused due to potential conflicts of interest.
The trial's proceedings are set to continue on Monday, as the community awaits further developments in a case that has cast a shadow over the former mayor's legacy and raised questions about the safety and well-being of local youths.
